BOOK REVIEW 5*****The Child Next Door by Shalini Boland
2 days is all it took for me to read this book. I was simply glued to it and could not put it down. Damn work did get in the way but I have to confess I sat in the carpark after work to finish it before going home.
It was brilliant. I couldn't figure out who did what at all in the book. The storyline was fantastic and her characters were solid and interesting. I quite enjoyed them.
It was my first time reading this authors work and I am hooked.
So what was it about?
Kirstie & Dom are a couple who have just had a baby Daisy. One day while Kirstie is looking after Daisy, she hears a man's voice on the baby monitor telling someone with him to grab the baby and run.
Kirstie of course panics and races up the stairs to check Daisy. But her baby is still sleeping and there is no one in the room with her.
Kirstie is baffled and upset that no one believes her when she tries to tell them what she heard. It's spooky and exciting all wrapped up in a nice bow for you.
It's a great price on Amazon at the moment.
Thank you to Bookouture and Shalini Boland Author for my copy of the book.

The Child Next Door An unputdownable psychological thriller with a brilliant twist eBook Shalini Boland Reviews
Oh! My! Stars!! I wish I could give this book a higher than 5 star rating! It is amazing!!! I spent half my time ready to throttle the main character and the other half not knowing what was going to happen next!!! There are more unexpected twists and turns in this story than the proverbial roller coaster. All of the characters are fully developed and believable; no cardboard characters here. The dialogue is sharp and natural and nothing feels forced. But the ending......Wow!!! Didn't see that one coming at all. I most highly recommend this book. However, don't start reading it if you have anything important to do for the next 48 hours. If you do, you will either be highly frustrated because you can't get back to the book or you will find yourself neglecting things you really should be doing in order to read. A DEFINITE WINNER!!!!!
The British are coming! No, the British have arrived! There are so many English books glutting the market today it is difficult to find an American author. Some tips on knowing whether the author is English or American Apparently the English only prepare Thai Curry or Spaghetti Bolognese in their kitchens, as that is the main meal in all English books. If you have a girl child she must be named either Daisy, Lucy, Emma or Gemma. The favorite drink is a "cuppa" or a bottle of wine-all to be finished in one sitting. And the wife, in this instance, Kirstie, is thought to be lame-brained and not in her right mind, while her husband, Dom, is the knight in shining armor, whose flaws have yet to be brought to the surface. English authors seem to love having the wife as a whipping post and misunderstood, while hubby can do no wrong! All in all, this book held my attention and showed a good cast of characters. The ending, both with Kirstie's thoughts and Martin's behavior, took me by surprise. But, please authors, do away with the negative wife scenario--it's getting to be "old-hat." (an American expression)
This is my first book by this author but certainly not the last. How I do love her writing style. Those negative reviewers must have this book confused with something else they were reading. The book just kept me turning the pages in anticipation. Paranoia was a wonderful vehicle to keep the story moving in ... But wait..It wasn't paranoia after all that had poor Kirstie feel like she was losing her mind. I loved all the characters portrayed in the book and just when I was getting over the twist at the book's end....I was rocked off my chair by the soon to come double twist. All in all a wonderful psychological thriller which I highly recommend to others. I look forward to reading more of the same from this author.
A fast paced thrill ride all the way through! Just when you think you've got the plot, it dissolves away. Keeps you guessing until the very end - and oh by the way, The End is not what you expected! Shalini Boland never disappoints.
I loved the author's book The Secret Mother, so had high expectations for this one. And it absolutely, 100%, delivered. So much so I devoured it in one day, neglecting laundry and other tedious chores. The word 'unputdownable' is often bandied about for books that I can so easily cast aside, but The Child Next Door had me gripped from the chilling opening to the shocking epilogue.
As with The Secret Mother, this is a tale of creeping paranoia set in a seemingly tranquil suburban setting. New mum Kirstie Rawlings is convinced that someone is trying to snatch her baby when she hears a man's voice on her baby monitor. It appears her fears are unfounded, but as other strange events occur – and husband Dom is less than supportive – Kirstie's world starts to unravel piece by piece. Secrets and lies lurk in every corner and threaten to rob her not only of her sanity, but also her precious daughter. Roll on July, and publication of The Silent Sister!
