This is Cerny's second book and just as entertaining as the first one, "Of Angels and Orphans". It is set in and around London in the 1700's and her attention to historical detail makes it all very believable. She also takes the time and effort to "paint" pictures of her characters, so much, you can almost see them. It flows well and keeps the readers interest throughout. Can't wait for her third book! Grays Hill Barbara T Cerny 9781609113032 Books Reviews
I received this book in exchange for a honest review.< This was an engaging regency romance featuring a wounded hero and a spunky heroine who saves him.
At the start of the book, the heroine's best friend Geoff is on his morning ride and it takes him past his best friend's house. The heroine's father gambled away their fortune and committed suicide and now the family is being thrown out of their London townhouse. The heroine Oksana is the only one in the family with nowhere to go - her brother is going back to school and her mother is going to stay with a relative. Geoff comes up with a solution to her situation. His brother Rafe (the current Duke) needs a governess for his two boys who are at Grays Hill(the Duke's country estate). Oksana interviews and gets the position. There is definitely a spark between them the first time they meet.
She arrives at Grays Hill and realizes things are not as they should be. There are secrets of which she has not been told and the estate has been neglected. She proceeds to remedy these situations. This enrages the Duke so that they constantly bicker back and forth. The sexual tension is rampant during their interactions. They do eventually get their HEA.
Thoughts on the Hero He is a distant, cold person at first. He has been hurt in the past. His ex-wife (who is dead) deceived him about her character. She flaunted her affairs in front of him. Therefore, he is distrustful of women.
Thoughts on the Heroine She is a spunky, resourceful woman who is not ashamed of herself. She does not let anyone talk down to her including the almighty Duke.
Overall, an enjoyable historical romance. I definitely will read more from this author in the future.

The Book
The story begins with Geoff aka Lord Tarkington, a sunny character and the younger brother of Rafe, the Duke of Essex. Geoff sees that his friend Lady Oksana Jane and her family are in deep trouble when the king’s men take away all their possessions and their home to pay off the loans of her dead father. He immediately jumps to their rescue.
Geoff sees to it that her mother is settled before offering Oksana the post of governess to his nephews at Grays Hill, the duke’s country mansion. While the dour duke is not too keen on the arrangement, he is convinced of the advantages.
Soon, Oksana takes over Rafe’s household and runs it smoothly, too much so for his liking. The servants adore her and are ready to do her bidding at the flick of her fingers. Was she aspiring to become the duchess?
Sparks fly when Oksana and Rafe come together – every time. Soon, the anger turns to passion. But will the duke ever escape his dead wife’s shadow to marry again?
My take on it
I like a story that starts with dialogue on Page 1. I could see that it was going to move fast with that kind of a beginning. The conversation set the background as the author introduces the characters.
Oksana is a strong woman who is loving, hardworking, truthful and determined. She is a bundle of energy who takes to living in Grays Hill as a duck takes to water. Her friendship with Geoff, her guileless nature and her playacting skills have been woven so beautifully into the story. What really touched my heart is the way she tames Lucifer, a wild horse that refuses to be handled by anyone. Oksana’s huge build should have been off-putting. But somehow, it makes her all the more endearing.
Rafe is angry with what life has dealt him. He loses his parents at a very young age - left to deal with the Duchy, his two younger sisters and a kid brother - a lot of responsibility for a man of 20. He does not have a choice but to grow up fast. His marriage has left him totally bitter and he has forgotten to smile, let alone laugh. The transformation of the duke under Oksana’s influence has been dealt with so wonderfully that it is a joy to read. One could see the resemblance between Lucifer and Rafe.
Then there is Geoff. He is fun, a truly loyal friend and an adoring uncle. I just loved his character and his relationship with Rafe and Oksana. He is totally unpretentious.
I have a request of Barbara T. Cerny – please, can you create a sequel for this book with Geoff as the hero?
I loved reading this period romance and will go with 5 stars. Looking forward to reading more by this author!
I enjoyed the heroine Oksana. She does neat things. It makes me think the author is writing about the kind of life she would like to live, if she were back there in 1801 England. This is not a suspense story - although there is a brief bad guy problem that gets solved. I have no complaints. No stupidity. Conflicts made sense. Motivations fit.
I liked the relationship development. Many books are weak on that. This is not immediate lust and sex. Rafe and Oksana have interesting interactions and conflicts for a long time before that happens. That was good.
My thoughts on the sex scenes Good. What I liked best was how they "desired" each other. The first sex scene was sweet, the way Rafe came to her and what he said.
STORY BRIEF
Oksana's father gambled away the family's money. Oksana is offered a job as governess/tutor to Rafe's children. Rafe's wife recently died. His wife did bad things to him, and he plans never to marry or trust women again.
DATA
Narrative mode 3rd person. Story length 272 pages. Swearing language mild including religious swear words, but rarely used. Sexual language mild. Number of sex scenes 4. Setting 1801 England. Copyright 2010. Genre historical romance.
Barbara has done it again with this book the story is fantastic and got me in again but I must admit Tressa is the one I really loved reading
