I have to write a review - because I've died laughing reading some of these negative reviews. I get that not everything can be everyone's cup of tea, and I've certainly found books that I don't like. But the way these reviews are writing it, you'd think the author spent 300 pages ranting about politics and trying to draw you over to the dark side, which is not the case.

So, briefly, my reason for 5 stars --- I liked the book so much I bought it after reading it free on Unlimited, because I intend to re-read it (and the series) as it finishes. Regardless of flaws the book may have, my desire to re-read it puts it in 5-star territory for me, personally.

Pros:
- Character development is better than most PNR.
- The romance underlies the story, rather than the story revolving around nothing but romance or explicit scenes.
- Has enough unresolved detail to make me wait (anxiously) for the next installment.

Cons:
- The main character caves in FAR easier than expected near the end of the book after her freak-out; seems out of character
- It is a little difficult to connect with some of the male characters because you don't understand where they are coming from since the entire book is in 1st person.

As for the poor reviews - for context:
1. There are 1-2 paragraphs mentioning climate change in this book - a half-page at maximum.
2. There is 1 paragraph providing statistics on the number of guns in the U.S. followed by a pondering from the main character about whether the situation at hand is a result of poor gun control.

That's it. There's no lingering theme on these topics.

Oh - and on the gun item - one of the other characters pulls out a gun at one point, and by the time the scene is finished, the main character is happy the other character had a gun to keep them safe --- so, an argument can be made that the "gun control" stance item is not really a stance as the character presents a different opinion later.

I compare this character to BONES (TV Show) in some ways. The character is intelligent, resorts to factoids under pressure, and is highly opinionated, yet can also be irrationally emotional. The opinions expressed in the book align with the science-minded personality of the character. Whether that opinion is also the author's opinion on these areas really doesn't matter, especially looked at in context - these "real life political topics" encompass ONE page (total) in almost 400 pages.

Not the best book of the year by a long shot. It has all kind of issues with pacing and storyline.
Everything happen in the first chapter and the epiligue. The main character is not relevant to the story, she is just there for the romance part.
Surprisingly, the story is written at least in decent english, and there's a decent pace to the romance part
This is an interesting (if not terribly unique) premise. I struggled getting into this though. Part of it was the writing style. The author used a lot of exposition and gave heavy descriptive scenes of places that I ended up skimming over. I didn't care to read all 5+ pages describing the mansion. Eve's thought processes were probably the most difficult part to read. She presents herself as this intellectual and as such we have to read huge paragraphs rationalizing her reactions. She's also a very inconsistent character. Despite being an intellectual, the first time she gets upset with the guys she assumes they're going to hurt her (despite all evidence to the contrary) and runs away.

The guys were either flat or completely unlikable. Alec is a jerk and we're never really given a reason for his terrible behaviour. He's hot and cold for no real reason.

I did appreciate all of Eve's budding female friendships. I actually thought this would be YA based on the first chapter but it's not (although the only sexy times were with Alec the jerk so...). Bottom line, this is a good start to a new series. Hopefully, as the author develops her skill she'll stop using so much exposition. A good 45% of this could have been left out without hurting the storyline. I'll probably read the next one.
I loved this book so much! I devour anywhere from 5-10 books a week and this book left me in such a euphoric and shocked state I didn't read anything of substance for nearly 2 days (that's like a lifetime)! I reverted to my most weathered favorites to soothe my soul while I reeled from this story.
Things to know before you read I can't really think of anything I didn't like in this book. Seriously. I tried and I have nothing.

I found Kaydence's characters very easy to love and look forward to seeing how their relationships evolve after [EVENTS IN BOOK 1]. I found the women relatable and the men likeable (when that was the intention). There was even a love-to-hate woman! I kind of hope she is a villain later on...

I found the unfolding backstory very interesting. I didn't feel like I got a huge info dump in chapter 1 and then everything else was just the story going on. Evelyn's past, which shaped her present, was presented as it became pertinent without feeling like the author just decided the character was this way because *insert past here for story progression*. I feel like I know Evelyn as I know myself.
The atmosphere and the environment are very well constructed. Since books present like movies to me, I can be knocked from a story and then struggle to get back into the atmosphere but I never had a problem with this book.
The writing is incredible. I could probably write a book about how great this book is but then that would take away from reading this book (for both of us). Definitely in my top 10 picks of 2018!
Good overall story. The author puts too many of her personal political views in the story. With as much political views and beliefs pushed in news, etc...I like to use reading as an escape.
If not for the political views the author makes known throughout the book (ie. climate change, gun control).
You want to write about that - fine. Leave it out of a PNR. There's a reason we read romance books. It's called escapism.
